Monumental Victorian Mahogany Extending Banqueting Table – 8 Leaves – Seats 18–2

£9,000.00Price
Quantity

An exceptional mid-Victorian English mahogany extending dining / banqueting table of monumental scale, dating from approximately 1860–1880. This impressive table was clearly made for a large country house, gentleman’s club, or institutional dining hall, where entertaining on a grand scale was required.

Crafted from beautifully figured solid mahogany, the table features a richly polished top with elegant rounded corners and a deep moulded edge. The timber displays a warm tone and striking natural grain that has developed depth and character over more than a century.

The table stands on large carved Victorian legs, each decorated with bold acanthus leaf carving and finely turned sections, terminating in original brass cup castors which allow the table to be moved when necessary despite its substantial size.

Extending Mechanism

This is a traditional Victorian pull-out extending dining table, opening smoothly to accommodate a full set of extension leaves.

The table comes with eight extension leaves, one of which is a narrower centre balancing leaf, designed by cabinetmakers to maintain alignment and stability when the table is fully extended.

When fully extended the table reaches an extraordinary banqueting length, comfortably seating 18–22 people, making it ideal for large family gatherings, restaurants, hospitality venues, or impressive boardroom use.

Craftsmanship

The underside construction reveals the quality of Victorian cabinetmaking, with substantial timber rails, metal brackets and original engineering supporting the extension mechanism. Tables of this size and quality were typically commissioned for large houses or formal dining environments.

Condition

Very good antique condition overall with minor age-related wear consistent with use and age.

As shown in the photos, there is a visible surface mark to the top (see close-up image) along with some light historic marks. These are purely cosmetic and consistent with the age of the piece and do not detract from its overall presentation.
